Stacy Lewis, Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel, Michelle Wie, and Juli Inkster have joined the field for the Kingsmill Championship at Kingsmill Resort, September 3-9, 2012

Arguably playing the best golf of anybody on the LPGA Tour, Stacy Lewis has soared up the Rolex World Rankings all the way to number two. Coming off a spectacular year in 2011 racking up 12 top-ten finishes, two second place finishes, and one major title win,Lewis is showing no signs of slowing down in 2012. Lewis has won two tournaments already this year, is currently the number one player on the 2012 LPGA Money List, and is the top-ranked American player.

Fan-favorite on the LPGA Tour, Natalie Gulbis, is currently playing in her 11th season on the tour. Gulbis earned a spot on the LPGA Tour in her first attempt in 2001 after finishing third in the LPGA Qualifying Tournament. The 2007 Evian Masters Champion has played on three victorious U.S. Solheim Cup teams (2005, 2007, and 2009).

Morgan Pressel turned professional at age 17 and is the youngest-ever winner of a modern LPGA major championship (2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship). The 23-year- old from Tampa, Florida is a three time U.S. Solheim Cup team member and is undefeated (3-0-0) in singles play in her appearances. Pressel has reached as high as fourth in the world rankings in her career and currently sits at number 30.

Michelle Wie made an early impact in the professional golf world, setting and still holding the record as the youngest player to make the cut in an LPGA event (13 years, 5 months, 17 days). By 2006, Wie had climbed to the third ranked female golfer in the world. Wie joined the LPGA Tour in 2009 and has won two titles (2009 Lorena Ochoa Invitational, and the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open).

In her first full LPGA season in 1984, Juli Inkster took home Rookie of the Year honors after winning two major championships. Throughout her career, Inkster has won 31 tournaments on the LPGA Tour including seven major championships. Inkster is fifth on the LPGA career money list and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000.

“We are ecstatic to announce the commitment of these five extraordinary athletes,” says Kingsmill Championship Tournament Director, Katherine Thigpen. “We are thrilled to be able to attract a field of this caliber as the LPGA Tour makes its return to Williamsburg for the first time since 2009. You can really sense the excitement around the community as we are now just two weeks away from teeing it up.”

The Kingsmill Championship will be staged September 3-9 at Kingsmill Resort’s River Course. The top women golfers in the world will compete for the $1.3 million purse in this 72-hole, stroke play tournament. Tickets start as low as $25 and can be purchased online at www.thekingsmillchampionship.com. Kids 17 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult.

Hampton Cup Regatta

imageWatch over 75 hydroplane boats and Jersey Speed Skiffs compete as Hampton hosts the national championships! The fun kicks off on Friday August 10, 2012 at 5 p.m. at the Paradise Ocean Club with the Bash on the Beach – a free event featuring live music, food & more! Racing starts Saturday at noon. Mill Creek, Fort Monroe entrance.

n 1926, a group of Hampton Yacht Club members decided to have a race to see who had the best navigation skills and which of their boats was the fastest. That spirit of friendly competition endured, and decades later it still serves as the catalyst for one of the most popular competitions in the speedboat racing world.

The modern Hampton Cup Regatta attracts vessels and crews from all corners of the U.S. It has seen racing teams from Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is the place where regional and world records have been set. It has truly blossomed into an international affair. Top speeds for the boats ranges from 80 to 170 mph.

But the one thing that has not changed through all these years is the notion of good-spirited fun, and bragging rights of course, among an ever-growing community of boat-lovers.

The local regatta  begins on the Hampton River in the area between the downtown Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel and the inlet near the Veterans Administration Medical Center. You can come visit the children’s area or one of the many food vendors. Spectators can also meet the drivers and pit crews, look at the boats up close and really get a feel for what goes into keeping these boats running by signing a waiver to enter the pits

Where is the best place to watch the race?

The Mercury Boulevard bridge is the best place to see the huge rooster tails up close.

Free admission.

Mid County Park Update-James City County

James City County Parks and Recreation hosted a community meeting to share renovation and design plans for a new playground structure to replace the existing Kidsburg playground at Mid County Park, 3793 Ironbound Road. James City County Parks and Recreation hosted a community meeting to share renovation and design plans for a new playground structure to replace the existing Kidsburg playground at Mid County Park, 3793 Ironbound Road.

Why: The current 24,000-square-foot playground was constructed in 1994 and does not meet current ADA guidelines nor does it fully meet today’s standards for public-use playgrounds.

Who’s paying: Project funding was appropriated by the James City County Board of Supervisors as part of the Parks and Recreation Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) budget. Safety: The project will be fully ADA compliant, universal and barrier free. The new proposed 30,000 square-foot playground will meet current accessibility and safety guidelines and standards. Playground Amenities: Kidsburg playground amenities will include a general play area, a ship replica (21-feet wide x 36-feet long) and a swing area. In addition, there will be a separate gated area for children aged 2 to 5. Dependent on funding, a spray pad element is still being considered. A water park was never a consideration for Kidsburg.

Your input: Please take a few moments to review the designs on the following pages. To share your comments and concerns, please complete a comment card available online here or you can email your comments to  parks.rec@jamescitycountyva.gov.  Please forward your comments and concerns no later than August 3.

Next Steps: Construction of the new playground is scheduled for October 2012 with a spring 2013 completion date.

Questions: Contact Nancy Ellis at Nancy.Ellis@jamescitycountyva.gov or call 757-259-5412.

Fence Pickets: If you purchased a fence picket at Kidsburg, and would like it back, please call 757-592-0495 and leave your name, the name on the picket, your phone number and a message. You can also request your picket online here

The pickets will be available for pick up in fall 2012 when playground renovations are scheduled to begin. A plaque will also be installed at the park to honor its history and those individuals and businesses who supported the park through fence picket purchases and as volunteers

Proposed Highlights for Kidsburg Playground—Age 2-5 Area ●(4) custom enclosed seat swings with log themed uprights ●custom canoe ●4-foot hollow log crawl ●wagon double slide ●log wall slide ●ground level cannon ●firewood climber ●log steppers ●Blacksmith climbing wall ●barrel crawl with anvil climber ●lookout bubble ●telescope ●interactive cannon ●upper and lower bell ●maps ●(2) shade structures ●custom fence w/wood themed posts and safety gate
