imageWilliamsburg has been hungry for Junior Golf Development programs that focus on developing individual skills, fostering talent to improve future high school teams and prepare young golfers for the collegiate level and beyond. Ed Teer Golf Academy now offers the area’s only year-long, multi-day program called Journey to Excellence. For the summer time we offer: US Kids Junior Camp and Ed Teer Golf Academy Junior Camps.
ETGA Junior Camps are for ages 10-14. I’ll discuss 9 year olds on an individual basis. Clubs are great to have but not necessary. Please don’t purchase before consulting ETGA. Not all junior clubs are created equal. The Ed Teer Golf Academy will be hosting three US Kids Junior Camps for juniors ages 5-11 and more info will be posted soon on the website for both programs.
The Journey to Excellence program for juniors aged 5-12 is called Rising Stars; juniors aged 11-14 can participate in New Competitive Golfer and more experienced golfers aged 13 and up can gear up for Striving for Excellence. The next session is slated to begin in early June and will be lasting through August on Thursdays and Saturdays(Including Tuesdays for Competitive Golfers and Striving for Excellence groups) but can be joined at any time to accommodate your family’s schedule. Mid County Park-Kidsburg to re-open in July 2013

imageThe renovation of Mid County Park, including the Kidsburg playground, is well underway. Significant rains and modifications to the soils have delayed the project; however, much progress has been made.

The old Kidsburg structure was removed, and contractors have prepared the site and installation of the new playground structure has begun. The new Park Office (pictured background) building is near completion and will include improved restroom facilities, a vending area, two staff offices and a fee-based community meeting room.

Both picnic shelters (foreground) received new roofing, and one shelter was enlarged due to the removal of an old concession room.

Improvements to the front parking lot are scheduled to take place in June. The basketball, tennis and volleyball courts as well as the walking trail remain open during daylight hours with parking available in the back parking lot. The park is expected to open in its entirety in mid-July.

During the Kidsburg renovations, please enjoy the playgrounds located within our other County parks and facilities—Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Forest Glen Park, Ironbound Park, Little Creek Reservoir Park, Upper County Park, the James City County Recreation Center, the James River Community Center and the Warhill Sports Complex. In addition to these sites, all Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools playgrounds are open to the community during after school hours.

The old Kidsburg, a community-built playground, opened in 1994 and no longer meets ADA guidelines or current standards for public-use playgrounds. The new playground will be fully ADA and safety compliant, universal and barrier free.

New boat ramp opens in Charles City County

boat rampOne of the most beautiful tidal stretches of the James River is more accessible to boaters today, thanks to a new boat ramp in Charles City County made possible by a $120,000 grant from the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic organization for Dominion Resources Inc.

Dominion, Charles City County and the Chesapeake Conservancy officials cut the ribbon today to open the boat landing at Lawrence Lewis Jr. River Park.

“The James River is Virginia’s treasure, bound intrinsically to its history and commerce,” said Robert M. Blue, senior vice president-Law, Public Policy and Environment, State and Federal Affairs. “Dominion believes that the best way to help people appreciate and protect the river is to get them to travel its waters, explore its wonders and marvel at its beauty. We are proud to have played a role in creating this new landing that will open the river to even more people.”

The opening culminates a 20-year effort by county officials and river enthusiasts to have a boat ramp built at the historic 24-acre park, which is where the Union Army crossed the James River in 1864 to lay siege to Confederate forces in Petersburg during the Civil War.

“This is a dream finally come true,” said Floyd H. Miles Sr., chairman of Charles City County Board of Supervisors. “Thanks to the support of Dominion, the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Chesapeake Conservancy, our residents can now enjoy the beauty and the history of the James River without having to tow their boats to another jurisdiction.”

In addition to Dominion’s funding, the county provided $125,000 and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation put in $50,000. The county built the 50-foot by 28-foot concrete ramp which also has two tending piers, a bulkhead for protection and parking for 12 boat trailers.

The new ramp provides the only boating access on the north side of the James River for a 36-mile stretch that runs from Henrico County to James City County. The ramp will also serve as an important access point to the James River Section of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. The Capt. John Smith Trail is a water route that follows the course of the English explorer on his voyage to map the Chesapeake Bay in 1607.

The Chesapeake Conservancy, based in Annapolis, Md., has a goal of developing new access points along the bay and its rivers. The conservancy sought and received the Dominion Foundation grant that provided the final dollars to make the ramp a reality.

“Improved access is vital to helping even more people develop an appreciation for nature and to help build support for the restoration of the bay and its rivers,” said Joanna Ogburn, program director for the Chesapeake Conservancy. “This new landing in Charles City County provides access to a long and beautiful stretch of the James, and we encourage canoeists, kayakers and boaters to follow Capt. Smith’s lead and get out and explore.”

Shagging returns to Yorktown for 2013

Beach music, also known as Carolina beach music, is a regional genre which developed from various rock/R&B/pop music of the 1950s and 1960s. Beach music is most closely associated with the style of swing dance known as the shag, or the Carolina shag, which is also the official state dance of both North Carolina and South Carolina. Recordings with a 4/4 “blues shuffle” rhythmic structure and moderate-to-fast tempo are the most popular music for the shag, and the vast majority of the music in this genre fits that description.

imageThose eager to scratch their shag-dancing itch will find what they’re looking for at the Yorktown waterfront starting next month.

The Riverwalk Beach Music Concert Series begins June 6, 2013 and will continue most Thursdays through Aug. 1, 2013. The shows are free and take place at Riverwalk Landing near the foot of the Coleman Bridge.

Entertainment will take place on the performance stage at Riverwalk Landing, overlooking the York River in Historic Yorktown.

This seven-week concert series will feature some of the area’s top acts playing beach favorites, oldies, Motown and more.  Start your weekend early this summer, and join us for Shagging on the Riverwalk every Thursday night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., June 6 through June 20, and again from July 11 through August 1.  The Colonial Shag Club will again provide shag lessons, demonstrations, club information, and will answer questions related to this popular form of dance.

Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes, as one of the area’s largest outdoor dance floors will give you the opportunity to practice your shagging:

Shady Area Rain Gardens topic of New Quarter Park program

Visit New Quarter Park on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. and learn how a unique rain garden was built to capture runoff in a shady area. The program will be presented by Jeanne Millin, Virginia Master Gardener, Tree Steward, Water Steward, and Virginia Master Naturalist.
Jeanne will lead visitors to the Rain Garden on the park’s Teaching Garden Trail, which has been developed with a variety of native plants that grow well in the dappled shade and are heat and drought tolerant. She will explain how the rain garden was constructed by several local groups and volunteers with native plants (lists of plants will be available). The rain garden calms and filters  stormwater runoff from the parking lot while taking advantage of the natural slope and not damaging tree roots. Participants are invited to explore the demonstration garden and ask questions about building rain gardens on their property for similar beautiful and environmentally sensitive results.
New Quarter Park is located in upper York County at 1000 Lakeshead Drive, next to the Queens Lake neighborhood. For more information, please call Parks and Recreation at 890-3500.

Virginia High School Mountain Bike Series in Williamsburg

Round 3 of the  Virginia High School Mountain Bike Series (VAHS MTB) happens in Williamsburg VA  Today at high noon at New Quarter Park  Riders will be challenged by some of the fastest and flattest trails of the season!  With current Varsity race leader out of own at Sea Otter, the leader’s jersey is up for grabs.  It is going to be an exciting day of interscholastic mountain bike racing in Virginia!

The series consists of five races, held in Williamsburg, Harrisonburg, Richmond and Charlottesville, and is open to all competitors from elementary to high school.  Competitors will come to Williamsburg from all over the state, but most are private-school mountain bike teams, such as the Miller School and the Blue Ridge School

Most of the races this year have been based around a three to four mile course loop, New Quarter Park will be no different. Cyclists will race laps around the park’s 3.5-mile
loop, built and designed by the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association.

J.V. and Elementary (beginner) categories continue to grow and are highly competitive.  Like the Varsity races, J.V. riders and Elementary School riders compete in both an individual points series with their own leader’s jerseys as well as separate team competitions.  J.V. is ideal for beginners, and Elementary is ideal for young riders.

All events are open for registration on BikeReg. Racers can save by purchasing a season pass for the entire series.  A season pass includes a free VAHS MTB t-shirt.

The minimum number of riders for a team to be eligible to score is 3 riders.  The scoring system is similiar to a high school cross country meet.   J.V. and Elementary scoring is the same as varsity. Teams are welcome to race with fewer riders, but they will not be eligible for team scoring.  Individual riders will still be eligible for individual points series.

Virginia High School Mountain Bike Series (VAHS MTB) is an interscholastic high school mountain bike race series that is coordinated by Miller School of Albemarle and sanctioned by USA Cycling. The 5-race series is open to ANY high school, middle school, or elementary school student in Virginia.

VAHS MTB Series‘ mission is to grow the sport of cycling while promoting active and healthy lifestyles for high school students.  We want students to enjoy the outdoors and and beautiful trails in Virginia.  At the same time, we hope to encourage more students to race bicycles. Considering Virginia has some of the best mountain biking in the country, if not the world, it makes sense to provide a series for students to compete while enjoying the outdoors and Virginia’s landscape.

bike event at New Quarter Park

Sailing Camp at Two Rivers

Young Sailors Courses

Young people and children take naturally to sailing. We are specialists in teaching children to sail. Our sailing program for children was developed , by us, from the Royal Yachting Association Young Sailors Program which breaks down the learning process into many stages so that each child can learn at his or her own pace. Courses run Monday to Friday, 9.30 to 3.30.

Stage 1 (Introduction)
Stage 2 (Basic)
Stage 3 (Intermediate)
Stage 4 (Advanced)
Stage 5 ( Pre – Instructor)
Race Training Course

We have been using this program for years and have successfully taught hundreds of young people from age 6 upwards (age 8 at Williamsburg location) to sail with confidence and have fun! We use Optimists, Sunfish, Lasers , and believe in having each child sailing their own boat from the first day.

 You should be Sailing !

By the end of the week, they will have enough confidence and enough skill to make a boat go anywhere they want. We take great care to treat each child as an individual and never to frighten them by asking them to do something before they are ready.

Children can move up through the stages of the program from one year to the next, and for the more advanced young sailors we run Race Training and Team Racing courses.

Children love to sail!

We organize lots of different sailing activities for children including 5 day sailing camps, race training camps, and afternoon sailing birthday parties.

Children can take shorter courses of 2,3 or 4 days if lack of time is an issue, and costs can be calculated per day.

* A full day for children is 9:30 – 3:30 with a lunch break

We have been running the sailing program at Two Rivers Yacht Club in Governors Land in Williamsburg since 2001.  This program is made open to the public in an ongoing effort by Two Rivers Yacht Club to introduce sailing to more and more young people.

The fleet here is comprised of Optimists (the international children’s boat, suitable for kids from age 8 to age 12) , 420’s (two man performance dinghy with spinnaker, suitable for teenagers) , Sunfish (suitable for teenagers) . We sail from the beach here – the river is very shallow which makes it very easy to launch and to return to the beach.

About us and our instructors.

Premier Sailing was founded by Irish sailors Phil and Arabella Denvir.

Both are steeped in sailing tradition, starting from the long tradition of sailing in Ireland. Both are keen racers, having raced small boats and big. They are classic wooden boat enthusiasts, having owned and restored boats like the famous Merle of Malham, and the 1900 classic cutter “Rowena, which they have cruised in Ireland and in the southwest of England. Arabella races on the women’s match racing circuit and is currently ranked in the ISAF World ranking list.

The Denvirs moved to Malta in 1993 and founded Malta Sailing School, which ran the Royal Yachting Association Certification program for adults and for children. They are also well known for having founded the Malta Young Sailors Club, which is a thriving Optimist and Laser racing club for young sailors.

In 1998 they moved to the USA to establish Premier Sailing at The Tides Inn in Irvington.

With great regret we have to say that Philip Denvir passed away in July 2011.  He is deeply missed by all of us, instructors, staff and customers alike.

The school continues  in the same tradition which is to give high quality personalized instruction in a safe, friendly, and fun environment, and to encourage our students to pursue excellence.

Flora Foray at New Quarter Park on April 6

Donna Ware, curator emeritus of the College of William and Mary herbarium and Flora of Virginia Project member, will lead a Flora Foray at New Quarter Park on Saturday, April 6, from
10 a.m. to 12 noon. The Flora Foray will celebrate the publication of Flora of Virginia, a landmark botanical reference book which describes 3,164 plant species and natural variants growing wild in the diverse habitats of the Old Dominion. After discussing the Flora of Virginia, Ware will lead a foray through New Quarter Park’s forests and ravines to find living specimens of some native Virginia plants described in the Flora.
More than 10 years in the making, the Flora is the first comprehensive catalog of Virginia plants since Flora Virginia, published in 1762, when the Commonwealth was still a colony and the Virginia landscape was dominated by the American Chestnut tree.
The Flora Foray is part of New Quarter Park’s 2013 Saturdays in the Park education and recreation program series. The 545-acre park includes diverse mature forest, ravine, and wetland habitats.
New Quarter Park is located in upper York County at 1000 Lakeshead Drive, next to the Queens Lake neighborhood. For more information, call York County Parks and Recreation (Monday to Friday, 757-890-3513) or New Quarter Park (Friday to Sunday, 757-890-5840).

Geocaching at New Quarter Park April 13

All you need to play is a handheld GPS or a GPS-enabled Smartphone and access to the official Geocaching website on the Internet at www.geocaching.com.
Geocachers navigate to specific sets of GPS coordinates and attempt to find the Geocache container hidden at a location. There are about a dozen caches hidden at New Quarter Park and about 60 others located within 5 miles. But that’s not all: geocaches are hidden in nearly 2 million locations worldwide.  Geocaching is a great way to see places you wouldn’t normally find.  It’s a great activity for families, Individuals, or couples. Kids of all ages love a good treasure hunt!

New High School Lacrosse Team forms in Williamsburg

Many thanks to Coach Charlie Turner for his efforts in bringing a boys high school lacrosse team to Williamsburg VA

imageSpring signals the return of baseball, track, tennis and soccer for many greater Williamsburg athletes. But for a continually growing segment of the population, lacrosse is becoming the sport of choice for the warmer weather.

Walsingham is perhaps the only Williamsburg school that has been able to meet the demands of establishing a lacrosse program. With a boys varsity team in place, the Trojans introduced a middle school girls team this spring.

And the Williamsburg Warriors Lacrosse League has also been a great option for youth interested in the sport.

But there has still been little opportunity for high school boys. Realizing this, a few prospective players and coaches banded together with the common interest of forming a new team in Williamsburg. After several years of planning and with the support of the Hampton Roads Lacrosse League, a chapter of U.S. Lacrosse, the Williamsburg JV High School team makes its debut this spring.

The squad, better known as the Royals, is made up of ninth, 10th and 11th grade boys from Warhill, Jamestown and Lafayette high schools. And the team includes both players with experience in the sport and some that are brand new. The team will compete with high school teams that include Grafton, Menchville, Poquoson ,Tabb , York, Cox , Currituck ,First Colonial, Grassfield ,Great Bridge, Hickory , Kellam, Maury, Princess Anne from the York County, Newport News, Poquoson, Va Beach, Chesapeake and Outer Banks areas

Charlie Turner is the Royals head coach, and is thrilled for this lacrosse expansion in greater Williamsburg.
