New High School Lacrosse Team forms in Williamsburg

Many thanks to Coach Charlie Turner for his efforts in bringing a boys high school lacrosse team to Williamsburg VA

imageSpring signals the return of baseball, track, tennis and soccer for many greater Williamsburg athletes. But for a continually growing segment of the population, lacrosse is becoming the sport of choice for the warmer weather.

Walsingham is perhaps the only Williamsburg school that has been able to meet the demands of establishing a lacrosse program. With a boys varsity team in place, the Trojans introduced a middle school girls team this spring.

And the Williamsburg Warriors Lacrosse League has also been a great option for youth interested in the sport.

But there has still been little opportunity for high school boys. Realizing this, a few prospective players and coaches banded together with the common interest of forming a new team in Williamsburg. After several years of planning and with the support of the Hampton Roads Lacrosse League, a chapter of U.S. Lacrosse, the Williamsburg JV High School team makes its debut this spring.

The squad, better known as the Royals, is made up of ninth, 10th and 11th grade boys from Warhill, Jamestown and Lafayette high schools. And the team includes both players with experience in the sport and some that are brand new. The team will compete with high school teams that include Grafton, Menchville, Poquoson ,Tabb , York, Cox , Currituck ,First Colonial, Grassfield ,Great Bridge, Hickory , Kellam, Maury, Princess Anne from the York County, Newport News, Poquoson, Va Beach, Chesapeake and Outer Banks areas

Charlie Turner is the Royals head coach, and is thrilled for this lacrosse expansion in greater Williamsburg.
