There’s treasures to be found throughout the Williamsburg VA area. The trek begins with you…and a GPS device. It’s called geocaching, an outdoors adventure game played all over the world where you go out and find hidden treasures left by other geocachers. As the warm temperatures start to blanket the Hampton Roads area, instead of looking for fun, why not be the fun?
If you have access to a GPS device, mount one on your bike and start tracking down items. You can find anything from geocoins, collectible coins that can be tracked online. Or you can create your own and activate its own new adventures. You can also get bit with a travel bug. This is can be any track able item; from an old toy to a small journal that collects each geocahcer’s story along the way. Groundspeak, the organizers of geocaching, will often host promotional items giving people the chance to help raise money for fundraising campaigns to winning 4X4 Jeeps. You can add your fun to the quest by creating a riddle or puzzle in order for the next person to figure out where you’ve hidden some treasure.
To get started, visit www.geocaching.com and register to participate in the action. After logging on, find a benchmark and see who has hidden what-if they’re willing to tell. After you log in your coordinates into your GPS, oil up your bike chain, grab your helmet, and start searching the town. This is also a good way to get exercise and appreciate other beautiful landmarks in your neighborhood. Take your family, make an outing of it with friends, or get away by yourself and see what you can discover.
The Serenity is owned and operated by Greg and Laura Lohse of Yorktown Sailing Charters. The Lohses purchased Serenity in 2000 in North Carolina where she had sat idle for years and was in need of a major refit. Greg and Laura spent the next few years lovingly restoring her to the fine vessel she is today. Captain Greg is a master carpenter and rebuilt all the woodwork aboard the vessel. They gutted the interior and rebuilt her from inside out.
Serenity was designed by Tom Colvin who for many years owned a boat yard on the East River in Miles VA. Tom Colvin also designed the schooner Alliance. Serenity was designed as a cargo schooner and had a large cargo hold in the center when the Lohses purchase her. They turned the cargo hold into a master stateroom and refitted her from a cargo schooner to a passenger vessel.
Greg and Laura have sailed Serenity as far as the Cayman Islands to participate in Tall Ship Festivals. They have also taken her throughout the Great Lakes as far as Chicago and all along the Eastern Seaboard from Nova Scotia to Florida. Serenity has won numerous Tall Ship Races including the America Sail Race in Beaufort North Carolina in 2006. She has raced in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race and also participates in the Hampton Blackbeard Festival every year reenacting the battle of Ocracoke.
For those who love history, yearn for romance, or have dreamed of experiencing a true sailing adventure, your ship has just come in!

Young people and children take naturally to sailing. We are specialists in teaching children to sail. Our sailing program for children was developed , by us, from the Royal Yachting Association Young Sailors Program which breaks down the learning process into many stages so that each child can learn at his or her own pace. Courses run Monday to Friday, 9.30 to 3.30.
Stage 1 (Introduction)
Stage 2 (Basic)
Stage 3 (Improvers)
Stage 4 (Advanced)
Stage 5 ( Pre – Instructor)
Race Training Course
We have been using this program for years and have successfully taught hundreds of young people from age 6 upwards to sail with confidence and have fun! We use Optimists, Sunfish, Lasers , and believe in having each child sailing their own boat from the first day.
Our Williamsburg location is at Two Rivers Yacht & Country Club where we offer summer sailing programs for kids.
We have been running the sailing program at Two Rivers Yacht Club in Governors Land in Williamsburg since 2001. This program is made open to the public in an ongoing effort by Two Rivers Yacht Club to introduce sailing to more and more young people.
The fleet here is comprised of Optimists (the international children’s boat, suitable for kids from age 6 to age 12) , 420’s (two man performance dinghy with spinnaker, suitable for teenagers) , Sunfish (suitable for teenagers) . We sail from the beach here – the river is very shallow which makes it very easy to launch and to return to the beach.
You should be Sailing !
By the end of the week, they will have enough confidence and enough skill to make a boat go anywhere they want. We take great care to treat each child as an individual and never to frighten them by asking them to do something before they are ready.
Children can move up through the stages of the program from one year to the next, and for the more advanced young sailors we run Race Training and Team Racing courses.

Mission
Virginia Venom Travel organization was created to offer talented and motivated youth players a chance to play against other competitive teams. Players have opportunities to improve their individual skills and learn team strategy with an emphasis on the dedication and perseverance needed to play competitive baseball. Although the goal of each outing is to win games, the focus is on learning how to win games as a team. Practices play an especially important role in Travel sports, since it is during those times that a great deal of work toward achieving individual and team goals gets accomplished. We are lucky to have such great coaches. Our talented sprinting and jumping coaches are Coach Turner and Coach Willis. Our distance team is lead by Lafayette senior Jennifer Brooks and many athletes from local HS running programs. Race-walking is Rich Higgins, head coach for Walsingham Academy. For throws we have Kevin Brooks, Asst coach at Lafayette HS along with HS athletes. We love to get the kids from different high schools together helping. When they teach the kids, they re-learn the skills.

It is required that all athletes bring water and/or sports drinks to practices and meets.
Recommendation: Put your child’s name on everything they bring to the track, including drinks.
What are the practice times and where?
Practices will be 2 days a week, Mondays and Thursday unless reschedule is necessary due to weather or track availability due to sports taking place at the high school track. All practices will take place at Lafayette High School.
What can I expect at practices?
At 5:30 sharp, athletes are to take a minimum 1 lap warm up jog and then proceed to the far end of the field for stretching. After stretching and announcements, kids will break off into groups: Sprinting (includes long jump and hurdlers), Distance, Throwing, Race-walking and 8 and under. The athletes will spend the remainder of practice in their groups.
Note: Please do not have the athletes eat heavily or consume dairy products before practices. Ensure they are properly hydrated and have had a healthy snack before arriving.
What can I expect at meets?
The first meet will be an All-comers meet in late March at Lafayette during practice. This will serve as a warm uph for our big home meet on April 24th called the Newtown Invitational. This meet is an all day, Saturday meet and it takes place at Warhill High School. We will need to know as soon as possible if your child will not be able to participate in this meet.
If your child participates in another sport, i.e. baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, you can typically participate in some portion of the meet and leave for your other sport. We have many parents that bring their kids for as much of the meet as possible and head to the other sport and return later. The coaches are accustomed to that and will work with you. Just let them know in advance when the child will be arriving and leaving so we know when to expect them and whether we can get them signed in for an event.
There is not a set time schedule for the events, however, there is an order of events for the races/field events so you will be able to get a general sense of the time of day for an event.
The developmental season ends in June. Most of the children continue to the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) qualifier meet the first weekend in June. In order to advance further, the athlete HAS to participate in that meet. These meets are qualifying meets so the athlete has to qualify to advance to the next meet. If qualified, there is a Regional meet in early July and Nationals (late July).
Bring ample fluids, sunscreen, and healthy snacks to the meets. Bring enough for a full day. Recommendation is to have umbrellas for shade or rain, blankets for cool mornings (although the Newtown Invitational always seems to be on the hottest day), chairs, and stadium seats. Depending on the weather forecast, you can be prepared to bring what you need and what will make you comfortable. The club has a tent that is set up for the team, and some parents opt to bring their own as well. There are usually enough tents available between the club, coaches, and parents.
Note: Please ensure the athletes are properly rested, have had a healthy breakfast, and are properly hydrated before arriving to the meet. Avoid dairy products before and during meets.

You can buy running shoes at any of the sports stores. However, Colonial Sports has a knowledgeable staff, and a wide selection. Jim has special 15% off deals for our team with youth sizes available.
